Ford/Lincoln/Mercury SRS DIAGNOSTIC SRS DTCs Accessing DTCs WITHOUT A SCANNER 1986-95 Access SRS DTCs by turning ignition switch to On position and observing the airbag indicator lamp. Certain SRS DTCs may not be shown on screen until at least 30 seconds after the ignition switch is moved to the On position. This is the amount of time needed for the diagnostic monitor to test and verify any and all system malfunctions. 1996-2002 Most OBD-2 vehicles SRS systems will turn OFF the SRS light after the problem has been corrected and only the code will stay in memory for a number of key on cycles. It is not necessary to erase the SRS memory for the repair to be complete. Simply make sure that the SRS light goes OFF, then you may return the vehicle to the customer. Access Diagnostic SRS DTCs (DTCs) by turning ignition On and observing the airbag indicator lamp. Certain DTCs may not be shown on screen until at least 45 seconds after the ignition has been turned On. This is the amount of time needed for the diagnostic monitor to test and verify any and all system malfunctions. If the airbag warning lamp is inoperative and a fault condition in the airbag system has been detected, a tone will sound in a pattern of five sets of beeps. If the airbag warning lamp is inoperative, it must be serviced before diagnosis can continue. When the Restraints Control Module (RCM/SRS Computer) detects a system fault, it will cause the airbag indicator to flash a coded, two-digit sequence. The first digit is flashed with a half second interval between pulses. There is a two-second pause before the second digit is flashed also with a half second interval between pulses. There is a five-second pause between each display. Each code will flash in priority order. Each code is flashed five times after which the airbag indicator will remain lit for the remainder of the key-on cycle. WITH SCANNER Connect a suitably programmed scanner to the Data Link Connector (DLC) and follow the tool manufacturer's instructions. Clearing DTCs 1986-95 SRS DTCs may only be cleared from diagnostic memory by repairing the malfunction which led to the trouble code being stored. 1996-2002 On Continental, Crown Victoria, Escort, Focus, Grand Marquis, LS, Sable, Taurus, Thunderbird, Tracer, Town Car and ZX2 models, after the malfunctioning component has been repaired, the stored DTCs will remain in the diagnostic monitor memory until at least 256 key On and Off cycles have been completed. On Contour, Cougar, Mustang and Mystique models, after the malfunctioning component has been repaired, the stored DTCs will remain in the diagnostic monitor memory until at least 128 key On and Off cycles have been completed. On all models, to clear DTCs before the 256 cycles, connect a suitably programmed scanner to the Data Link Connector (DLC) and follow the tool manufacturer's instructions. WITH A SCANNER 2003 Connect A New Generation Star (NGS) tester, or suitable aftermarket scanner (SnapOn, OTC, Mastertech) to Data Link Connector (DLC) and follow manufacturer's instructions. 2004-11 Connect a Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) and Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) with appropriate adapters, or suitable aftermarket scanner (SnapOn, OTC, Mastertech) to Data Link Connector (DLC), and follow manufacturer's instructions. Clearing DTCs 1. Connect a suitable OEM or aftermarket scanner (SnapOn, OTC, Mastertech) to DLC. 2. Turn ignition switch to Run position. 3. Follow scanner manufacturer's instructions to clear DTCs. 4. Before proceeding with clearing operation, make note of DTCs shown on screen. Once cleared, DTCs cannot be retrieved. 5. All continuous DTCs will be shown on screen on the screen. 6. Clear DTCs. 7. Continuous DTCs that have been cleared will not reoccur. Only new DTCs which were not present before clearing can occur as Continuous after clearing. Continuous DTCs is FORD's word for memory codes.
