HYUNDAI All Models Theory of Operation The SRS System consists of the airbag explosive module(s), clockspring, SRS Control computer (SRSCM), SRS service reminder indicator lamp, system wiring and a knee bolster. The driver's airbag explosive module is located in the steering wheel center and contains a folded air bag and inflator unit. A clockspring interconnection between the system wiring harness and steering wheel is located within the steering column. On 1994-96 models, the passenger's airbag explosive module, located on the passenger side of the instrument cluster, contains a folded air bag, inflator unit and low pressure switch. On 1997-2002 models, the passenger's airbag explosive module, located in the passenger side of the instrument cluster, contains a folded air bag and the inflator unit. On all models, the SRSCM, which monitors the system, also contains an electronic accelerometer which senses vehicle deceleration. The SRSCM is located on the floor panel below HVAC unit on Accent and under the console assembly on Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tiburon, XG 300 and XG 350 models. When the SRSCM senses a fault or condition within the system, the instrument cluster SRS lamp will light. The module will also store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in its memory. The impact sensing function of the SRSCM is carried out by the electronic accelerometer, which continually monitors vehicle deceleration and delivers a signal to the microprocessor through the amplifier and filtering circuitry. Air bag deployment will occur in frontal or near frontal impacts of moderate to severe force. On 1999-2006 models, there are also seat belt pretensioners in the center pillars. These will tighten the seat belts should the SRSCM determine that an impact of sufficient force has occurred. On 2000-06 models, side impact airbag explosive modules are included in the sides of the front seats. The side air bags will deploy when their satellite sensors determine that an impact of sufficient force has occurred. On 2001-06 Elantra, Sonata, XG 300 and XG 350 models, feature a Passenger Weight Detection (PPD) system to determine if a passenger is sitting in the front passenger's seat. The concept is to prevent needless replacement of the passenger's airbag explosive module if a passenger is not on board if a collision happens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KIA All Models Theory of Operation The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and passenger by activating and deploying the driver, passenger, side and curtain air bags as well as the belt pretensioner in certain frontal or side collisions. The SRS consists of a driver air bag module located in the center of the steering wheel, a passenger air bag module located in the passenger side crash pad, two seat-belt pretensioners, four side air bag modules located in each seat, two curtain air bag modules located in upper pillar or headliner, the SRSCM located under the floor console box which monitors the system, two side impact sensor (SIS) and two front impact sensor which sense vehicle deceleration, a spring interconnection (clock spring) located within the steering column, SRI (Service Reminder Indicator) located in cluster, system wiring and wiring connectors. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MITSUBISHI ALL YEARS THEORY OF OPERATION DIAMANTE, ECLIPSE, EXPO, GALANT, LANCER, MIRAGE, SIGMA & 3000GT The SRS or Supplemental Restraint System consists of driver's airbag module, passenger's airbag module, clockspring, seat belt pretensioner (pyrotechnic explosive device) and the SRS or Supplemental Restraint System diagnosis unit with safing G-sensor and an analog G-sensor. airbags will deploy when the analog G-sensor and safing G-sensor activate while the ignition is in the On position. This is designed to occur in frontal or near frontal impacts of moderate to severe force. On Lancer, 2000-03 Galant and 2000-02 Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder models, a side impact airbag system is also used. This system consist of side impact airbags modules and side impact crash sensors. The side impact airbag modules are located in the front seat back assemblies. Side impact airbag sensors are located inside the center pillars. The side impact airbag sensors monitor the shocks incurred by the side of the vehicle. When a side impact of sufficient force is encountered, the side impact airbags will deploy. On 1996-2002 Diamante models, the seat belt pretensioner (pyrotechnic explosive device) device is built into the front seat belt retractors. The seat belt pretension device activates to retract the front seat belt and remove looseness in the event of a collision in which deceleration exceeds a specified value. On 2000-02 Mirage models, the seat belt pretensioner (pyrotechnic explosive device) device, which is deployed manually, is built into the driver's front seat belt retractor. The seat belt pretension device activates to retract the front seat belt and remove looseness in the event of a collision in which deceleration exceeds a specified value. On 1991-96 3000GT, 1992-96 Diamante, 1994-96 Galant, 1995 Eclipse and 1990 Sigma models there are also left and right-hand front impact sensors. MONTERO & MONTERO SPORT The SRS or Supplemental Restraint System consists of left and right-hand front impact sensors, driver's and front passenger's airbag modules, and the SRS or Supplemental Restraint System diagnosis unit with a safing impact sensor. The airbags will deploy when the safing sensor and either or both impact sensors simultaneously activate while the ignition is in the On position. This is designed to occur in frontal or near frontal impacts of moderate to severe force. On 2001 and up models, the seat belt pretensioner (pyrotechnic explosive device) device is built into the front seat belt retractors. The seat belt pretension device activates to retract the front seat belt and remove looseness in the event of a collision in which deceleration exceeds a specified value. On 2000 and up Montero models, a side impact airbag system is also used.
